Choosing the right equipment

The cargo's dimensions and weight decide the method — not the other way around:

  • Flat rack / open-top containers: for cargo that's only modestly over standard size, keeping it within container handling systems.
  • Breakbulk on conventional vessels: for individual heavy pieces using the ship's gear or shore cranes.
  • RoRo: ideal for vehicles, trailers and anything that can be rolled aboard on its own wheels or a MAFI trailer.
  • Heavy-lift vessels: purpose-built ships with high-capacity onboard cranes for the largest, heaviest single lifts — the kind that carry port cranes and refinery modules whole.
