A shipment has both a gross weight and a volumetric weight. Gross weight is its actual weight, including packaging, while volumetric weight represents the space it occupies based on its length, width and height. For air freight, it is commonly calculated as Length × Width × Height in centimetres ÷ 6,000. For example, cargo measuring 100 × 100 × 96 cm has a volumetric weight of 160 kg, even if its actual weight is only 100 kg. For Less than Container Load (LCL) sea freight, cargo size is normally measured in Cubic Metres (CBM) and compared with its weight, while Full Container Load (FCL) shipments are measured according to the container used.
